compare respiratory organs and gas transport in blood between mammals and birds

( Animal physiology )

Solutions

Expert Solution

The respiratory organs of both birds and mammals are lungs. In birds the respiration is through the air sacs connected to lungs and the passive pump for air exchage is airsacs. The muscular diaphram is absent in birds and the lugs exhibit a constant lung volume. The expiratory pump is active. In mammals the muscular diaphram is the function as the main inspiratory pump and passive pump is alveoli.Mammalian lungs exhibit change in the lung volume and the expiratory pump is a passive one.In both of mammals and birds gas transport in blood is by the 4 chambered heart which having 2 atria and 2 ventricle. It exhibit double circulation and it helps to improve the efficiency of seperation of oxygenated blood from deoxygenated blood. The circulatory system of both birds and mammals have 2 systems such as pulmonary circulation ( from right side of pump) and systemic circulation ( from left side of pump) and they are warm blooded animals.
