If you want to do psychotherapy when you finish your training, what sorts of professional training should you pursue? If you want to be able to prescribe psychotropic medications as part of the
the treatment you provide, what sort of training should you pursue?
Psychotherapy is the name of the treatment used by mental health professionals to treat all kinds of mental health disorders which include depression, anxiety, behavioural problems etc.
If someone just want to do psychotherapy then there are various source of courses and training programs in which you can learn about psychotherapy and become a therapist
These courses and training programs would include degree in clinical psychology Masters in psychology, social psychology, Counselor, special course in psychotherapy after psychology & PhD programs in psychology.
All these training programs would help you in becoming a therapist and and one would be allowed to do counselling & treat mental disorders.
But if someone want to prescribe medications along with the psychotherapy then they have to complete the training program to become a psychiatrist.
MD IN PSYCHIATRY is the only course that will allow you to prescribe medications along with therapy. Other psychologist & psychotherapist are only allowed to do counselling not to prescribe medications.
