Q5: A hydraulic punching machine is used to make holes in a plate using two steel punches having different diameter. By applying a compressive stress of 37 x103 kN/m2 using a punch of diameter 50 mm, the maximum shear stress developed in the plate was found to be 290 N/mm2. Suggest the value for thickness for the plate suitable for this loading condition.
What will be the change in the shear stress when a compressive force of 85 kN is applied on the plate of same thickness using another punch having diameter 12% more than the first one? Check which one of the steel punches used is safe against shear, if the permissible safe shear stress on the plate based on the design conditions is limited to 300 N/mm2. Based on the results, discuss how the thickness of the plate and the diameter of the punch can be modified to withstand the safe
shear stress

Ellay steel corp. is evaluating two different steel bending machines using its WACC of 7.5%. Machine A costs $320,000, has a three-year life, and has pre-tax operating costs of $83,000 per year. Machine B costs $495,000, has a five-year life, and has pre-tax operating costs of $42,000 per year. Both bending machines are in Class 8 (CCA rate of 20% per year). Two drilling machines(machine A and machine B) can drill deep holes with different diameters on workpieces. The processing time of the two machines are random due to various workpiece materials. Suppose the time it takes machine A to complete drilling one hole is exponentially distributed with mean 1.5,and the time it takes machine B to complete drilling one hole is exponentially distributed with mean 1. If the two machines work independently: 1) what is the probability that machine A completes...

A Brinell hardness tester is used to determine the hardness of 1/2" thick steel plate. The specifications for the steel require that the steel have a tensile strength between 125 ksi and 150 ksi. A 3000 kg load is used for the test. A. Calculate the minimum and maximum Brinell hardness of the steel. B. If a hardness test reveals that the Brinell hardness of the steel plate is 260 BHN what is the diameter of the indention in the...

A manufacturer uses two machines to drill holes in pieces of sheet metal used in engine construction. The workers who attach the sheet metal to the engine become inspectors in that they reject sheets so poorly drilled that they cannot be attached. The production manager is interested in knowing whether one machine is produces more defective drillings than the other machine. As an experiment, employee mark the sheets so that the manager can determine which machine was used to drill...

Brooklyn Corporation manufactures DVDs. The machine that is used to make these DVDs is known to produce 6% defective DVDs. The quality control inspector selects a sample of 100 DVDs every week and inspects them for being good or defective. If 7% or more of the DVDs in the sample are defective, the process is stopped and the machine is readjusted. What is the probability that based on a sample of 100 DVDs the process will be stopped to readjust...
