How can a schema result in discrimination? What are some variables covered in the Social Psychology chapter that would influence resulting discrimination? Described five or more. How can chronic exposure to discrimination result in mental health outcomes?
Schema refers to the mental framework that makes sense of aspects of the environment, it facilitates to interact with the society in an atomatic manner
Gender schema suggests that gender expectations are based on role expectation of each sex. For eg: if a man achieves something it is percieved as hardwork but when a woman achieves something it is perceived as luck. Hence woman are percieved on lighter side, even in 2018 they are expected to maintain the balance between home and the professional work whereas men on the other hand can stay back forlonger hours in office.
Role schemas - IT is about expectated behaviour by proffesionals - eg doctors, lawyers, tecahers etc.
Self schemas - they are the expectation which is one keeps bout himeself/herself.
1) Stereotypes (Set of beliefs we hold against a group of people eg: people of certain culture, certain caste etc) , and 2)prejudices (it is negative opinion which is not based upon actual experience) help in discrimination. 3) Cognitive load - when people are thinking about many things and at the same time get distracted, eg: decisions made in noise/commotion are can be haphazard. 4)Some non verbal cues also result eg: less similing, sitting far away results into unconscious development discrimination 5) Internal and external motivators may lead to such discriminatory behaviour.
Let us take common example, if any woman or any black child is discriminated, then it might result in less brain development. They may tend to perceive themselves as less powerfull, or one having low IQ. whereas they really aren't because we are gifted with same intellectual powers. A person may also go into depression very easily or they may carry out the same behaviour for many years.
