The idea of self-ownership or individual sovereignty goes back
at least to John Locke, when he wrote, "Every man has a Property in
his own Person."Sure, you could easily define "own" conventionally,
as meaning to exert exclusive control over. But the words 'I" and
"self" are two of the hardest terms to reason about, and have
busied philosophers for over 2500 years.It is a paradox.For
example, I really own my mind, then I should be able to control it
to think anything, including to think that I do not own my
mind.
Collectivist thought is that you do not own yourself - society
or some collective owns you and has the right to control you
because you have duties to the collective. The group may adopt
policies that lend you to yourself, within provisions set by the
group, but the group may change those provisions at will.
The Philosophy of Liberty, which includes libertarianism, has
the opposite foundation, Individualism: in the material world each
individual owns himself. God or some supreme being may own us in
the non-material, eternal spirit world of heaven or whatever, but
in the physical world we own ourselves.
That does not mean we have no social or spiritual or other
metaphysical duty to others, merely that no human agency may employ
violence or physical force to compel us to fulfill our duty. God
may hold us accountable, the attitudes of others may hold us
accountable by disapproving or withdrawing friendship, but absent
divine intervention we are not subject to physical force or
violence. The underpinning of this self-ownership is the natural
right to own oneself. Or self-ownership is the logical consequence
of our natural rights.
Just as one need not believe in a god to realize that creation
happened, one need not believe in a god to realize humans have a
natural right to self ownership and other rights that derive from
simply being human. Whether there is a God or not, whether He owns
us or not, the State does not own us, society does not own us, and
no government owns us - as far as all those human entities are
concerned, we own ourselves.
We own ourselves and this is the reason why we can own other
resources that belong to us. State laws however, infringe upon our
self ownership rights.
