Write a paper of approximately 750 words that discusses the following:
Identify a character with which you are familiar: either a character from a movie, book, or a historical figure and describe his or her personality and any relevant background information.
Analyze this person using the different stages of development and perspectives of human nature learned so far in this course.
Describe which counseling modality you would use to work with this individual if he or she were your client.
What would the stages be according to Freud? Oral, anal, Phallic? Or is id, ego, superego considered stages? I am not sure what stages I should write about. I was going to use the character Harry Potter.
Answering your question, the stages of development would be oral, anal, phallic, latency and genital stages.
According to Freudian stages of development, Harry Potter would be in the Genital stage of development. In this stage, children reach sexual maturity which defines their adult behaviour. When the development is resolved, then children have normal relationships with the opposite gender, whereas fixation in this stage leads to unsatisfactory interpersonal relationships. This stage starts from puberty and goes on till death.
From the story of Harry Potter it could be seen that, Harry was suffering from Oedipus Complex, that is the reason why he sees his father as a rival while showcasing his love for his mother. Oedipus Complex takes place as a result of fixation during the Phallic stage itself.
Therefore, the counselling therapy that would work for him would need to start from his childhood. His childhood conflicts needs to be resolved and then his current interpersonal issues nees to be handled. Therapies such as hypnosis could be used in order to find out the subconscious conflicts as Harry was a child who lost his parents and grew up with his aunt and uncle. Therefore, there should be many unresolved childhood conflicts which could have gone to his subconscious mind. The counsellor needs to trace them and then resolve the conflicts accordingly.
