Ecologists periodically measure the concentration of coliform bacteria at an urban reservoir. Each
time, water samples are taken from various random locations within the reservoir. The distribution
of bacteria counts in the past has followed a normal distribution with a mean of 2.8 ppm (parts per
million). In the latest set of readings, the mean count for the 27 water samples was 2.98 ppm with an
s.d. of 0.455 ppm. Thus there is some evidence that the bacteria concentration in the reservoir has
increased.
a. Set up hypotheses for testing whether the bacteria concentration in the reservoir has increased.

A geologist examines 22 water samples for magnesium concentration. The mean magnesium concentration for the sample data is 0.637 cc/cubic meter with a standard deviation of 0.0358. Determine the 95% confidence interval for the population mean magnesium concentration. Assume the population is approximately normal. Step 2 of 2 : Construct the 95% confidence interval. Round your answer to three decimal places.

pH is a measure of proton activity and not concentration. (a) Calculate the pH of water (T = 25o C) containing only 10-7 M H+ , i.e. in ultrapure water. (b) If the same water also contains 0.36 M NaCl, re-calculate the pH. Use the Debye-Huckel equation with A = 0.511 as an approximation to calculate the activity coefficient. (c) Explain the difference in pH.

An environmental chemist wants to use gas chromatography to measure the herbicide atrazine in water samples. This analysis is originally conducted on a 10-m long and 0.53-mm inner diameter open-tubular column that contains a 1.20-μm thick coating of a stationary phase, which gives a capacity factor of 10.5 for atrazine. The chemist later switches to another column of the same size and type that has a 2.65-μm thick coating of stationary phase. If all other conditions are kept the same,...
