Workers in the most chemical process industries are exposed to various
toxic chemicals without considering health and safety measures that could
lead to different harmful symptoms. If you will be given a task to work as a
chemical engineer, for health and safety in the process industries, what
necessary measures and risk assessment techniques would you
implement in order to control and reduce the level of risk?

Solutions

Expert Solution

As chemical engineers, we should take several steps for the safety of workers:-

A Safety Committee will be formed with the task of working regularly with safety issues. Itwill start to work with the following:-

assess chemical hazards and set priorities concerning the safety in the organization

contacts with authorities/laboratories to create a monitoring system for chemical hazards, and to reliably measure and/or estimate occupational exposures to chemicals when needed.

start collecting case studies of accidents and sickness records in the enterprise to create a basis for priority measures in the control of hazards.

identify chemicals in use and obtain information about their hazards. collect this data and make an inventory list of all chemicals used in the factory: create a Register for Workplace Chemicals.

use technical measures to prevent chemical hazards at source, and to prevent the transfer of dangerous chemicals.

If hazardous chemicals can be replaced by less dangerous ones then use less hazardous chemicals.

Research indicates that chemical industries located along a river discharge highly toxic effluents into the river in your country. This pollutes the river water and contaminates fisheries resources for which the industries do not compensate for the reduced quality of the river water and fisheries losses. If you are a high-ranking government official with an expertise in environmental economics, what different methods will you consider to apply to address the issue? Give an international example to show that the effluents...

Most chemical reactions leave either unreacted chemical (like in the limiting reagent problem) or produce unwanted chemicals. Why is it important to identify and remove these impurities from reactions involving food sand pharmaceuticals? Terms like solution, acid, base, electrolyte and dilution are used commonly in everyday life. Choose a term from this unit that you commonly hear and explain in what context do you hear it. It the context positive or negative and why. Oxidation of metals is very...

1. Write the one property of chemicals that is most relevant to the process of separation by TLC or column chromatography. Then circle the one most correct among the following choices for whether that property is specifically about: "individual atom(s)", "individual bond(s)", or "the net effect/the molecule as a whole". 2. If one analyte substance is more polar than another, how will the progression of this more-polar analyte through your chromatography column compare to the less-polar one? Choose among: "move...

A chemical process has produced, on the average, 800 tons of chemicals per day. The daily yields for the past week are 785, 805, 790, 793, and 802 tons. The sample standard deviation is s = 8.34. (a) Do these data indicate that the average yield is less than 800 tons? Formulate and test an appropriate hypothesis using α=0.05. (b) Find the bounds on the p-value for this test.
