Abnormal behaviour is rare, out of ordinary, results in functional impairment of the person. There are four main models of abnormal behaviour

1. Behavioural - it believes that abnormal behaviour is acquired through environment. One of the common forms of treating is by aversion therapy which uses another stimulus to for the treatment of abnormal behaviour stimulus. It is mostly used during phobias.

2. Biological - this states that abnormal behaviour is the result of chemical imbalance in the brain and it can be treated with the help of drugs like physical disease. For eg it is believed that anorexia nervosa can be treated by induction not seretonin. Or electro convulsive therapy is given for short term in depression.

Cognitive model. This suggests a person to think differently rather. It believes that thinking bis based on the behaviour. It questions irrational thoughts, feelings and emotions. Rational Emotive Therapy comes under this.

Psychodynamic model. This believes that abnormal behaviour results from repressed thoughts esp during childhood. Hence it a person speaks openly then his mind may become clear.
