For primary elections and conventions, the election process begins. These two methods are used by states to select a possible presidential nominee. Primaries usually use secret ballots to vote. Caucuses are specific groups of voters who vote for a particular candidate at the end of the meeting. Then it moves to nominate conventions where political parties select a nominee to unite behind each other. Every presidential nominee also announces a vice presidential running mate during a political party convention. The candidates then work to clarify their beliefs and strategies to voters across the country. They may also participate in discussions with other party candidates.

Americans go to their polling station during the general election to cast their presidential vote. But the count of those votes— the popular vote determines the winner not.
