Referring to the documentary “The Released” What theory best explains why that crime problem exists? How does the theory explain the problem ? 200 words

Solutions

Expert Solution

Robert Merton’s Strain theory best explains the problem identified in this documentary. It suggests that when people are forced to achieve a goal without proper means to achieve them, they would engage in crimes. This would mean that it is also applicable to those with mental disorders released from the prison. The chances of people with mental disorders to return to the prison again is more than the general population although it’s also true with the general population. When people are released from the prisons, they are forced live the same life again without any clinical, social and familial support which would force them to commit the crimes again. When people, especially the mentally disordered people face the strain of livelihood, lifestyle and mental stability to be guided and motivated, they would be forced to engage in crimes because they would also lack the mental capability to differentiate between the actions that are accepted and not accepted. In the event of little or no support from the government agencies in terms of counselling, rehabilitation and emotional support, people who are mentally ill would live in an unfavourable condition which would force them to get back to the prison as soon as they are released due to lack of hope in the society.
