Steps to Take When Performing an Abdominal Assessment :-
1. Privacy
2. Clean your hands
3. wear gloves
4. keep a stethoscope
Insertion of ryle's tube
Description of skill:- it helps in gaining access to the stomach and its contents. This enables you to drain gastric contents, decompress the stomach, obtain a specimen of the gastric contents, or introduce a passage into the GI tract.
indication:- - 1.Comatose patients
2. stroke patients
3.gastric obstruction
4. esophageal cancer
5. administering to GI tract to do contrast study

Pre procedure: -the patient be reassured - explain the procedure intra procedure -position them comfortably -ask the patient to keep swallowing post procedure:- - confirm it is in the stomach itself by auscultation -fix it securely |
- ryle's tube inserted - medicines and food can be given through the tube |
client education:-
- be careful not to pull it out
-if bleeding or breathing difficulty pull it out
-never try to introduce it yourself
potential complications:-
- inserting into trachea
- trauma to naso pharynx, pharynx and esophagus
