- Calculate the atomic packing factor for Face Centered cubic and Body Centered Cubic crystal structures

- Calculate the atomic packing factor for Face Centered cubic and Body Centered Cubic crystal structures

Solutions

Expert Solution

The atomic packing factor is the ratio between the volume of the basic atoms of the unit cell (which represents the volume of all the atoms in one unit cell)to the volume of the unit cell itself. APF depends on the radius of atoms and characterization of chemical bondings.

Body centred cubic has atoms at the 8 corners and one at the centre as shown below

The 8 semi quarter atoms constitute one atom and that that one at the centre together make 2 atoms.

The face centred cubic has atoms at all the 8 corners and at the centre of all the 6 faces. The 8 semi quarter atoms constitute one atom and the 6 half atoms constitute 3 atoms. All total 4 atoms as shown below

If you have any doubt, please ask me in the comment section.
