Between 4:00PM and 6:00PM the vehicles arrive to the entrance ramp of a regional toll road at a constant rate of 1740 vehicles per hour. The toll plaza at the entrance ramp has five toll booths, which combined can process up to 34 vehicles per minute. At 4:30PM one of the toll booths is disabled due to electronics malfunction, which reduces the vehicle processing capacity of the toll plaza to 27 vehicles per minute. At 5:00 PM the toll booth is repaired and the toll plaza capacity is restored back to 34 vehicles per minute. Assuming that the vehicle arrivals and departures at the toll plaza have uniform deterministic distributions, determine the total duration of the queue that had formed due to the toll booth closure, in minutes.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Initial from 4:00 pm to 4:30 pm arrival rate (29veh/min) is less than departure rate (34 veh/ min), so there is no queue between this time, queue starts from 4:30 pm and ends at 5:12 pm that means duration of queue is 42 minutes.

1.) Vehicles arrive at an entrance to a recreational park. There is a single gate (at which all vehicles must stop), where a park attendant distributes a free brochure. The park opens at 08:00 am, at which time vehicles begin to arrive at a rate of 480 veh/hr. after 20 minutes the arrival flow rate declines at 120 veh/hr, and it continues at that level for the remainder of the day. Vehicles begin to arrive at a parking lot at 6:00am at a rate of 8 per minute. Due to an accident on the access highway, no vehicles arrive from 6:20 to 6:30am. From 6:30am on, vehicles arrive at the rate of two per minute. The parking lot attendant processes incoming vehicles (collects parking fees) at the rate of four per minute throughout the day. Assuming D/D/1 queuing, draw a queuing (arrival-departure) diagram to present the events described and determine total...

A 6-lane two-way arterial road has a maximum flow of 6,000 vehicles per hour on one direction. It is operating at 3,600 vehicles per hour at time, t=0. A collision occurs, blocking the two lanes, and restricting the flow of the third lane to 1,800 vehicles per hour. A microbrewery makes a beer that contains an alcohol level between 4 and 6 degrees, assumed to be normally distributed. During the 20 fermentation days, the content of each tank is regularly brewed so that it remains homogenous. Next, the content of each tank is filtered and bottled. Ten bottles then are randomly selected. For a given sample, the level of alcohol in each bottle was as follows: 5 6 4 4 5 6 5.5 4 4.3 5.2 (a) For...
