pros and cons of using normative standards of health and disease?
Pros: -
Time tested so lesser risks. The methods have been tried, tested and also been in use for long, hence the effects are already known so risk factor is less.
Cost effective., as the pathways are already established to be followed, the means (methods) are already set in place reducing costs.
Familiarity creates trust. As normative standards are already in operation, there is a sense of familiarity amongst everyone so it builds trust including the medical community as well as the general public.
Cons: -
No scope for new learning and breakthroughs. As the standards are followed strictly, it reduces any scope for improvisations and new researches in specific areas.
‘One glove does not fit all’. There may be differences in what is being required, applying normative standards may or may not benefit everyone. Customization is needed on person to person basis, normative standards eliminates this.
