Consider the chemical equation 2NH3 ? N2 + 3H2. the equilibrium is to be established in a 1 liter container at 1,000 K, where Kc= 4.0*^-2. Initially1,220 moles of NH3 are present. Estimate equilibrium concentration of H2.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution

Given data

Kc =4.0*10-2

Initial moles of NH3 = 1220

Equilibrium concentration of H2= ?

Lets make the ICE table

    2NH3 ------ > N2 + 3H2

I   1220 M              0              0

C   -2x                     +x            +3x

E   1220-x               x              3x

Lets write the equilibrium constant expression

Kc =[N2][H2]3/[NH3]2

Now lets out the values in the formula

4.0*10-2 = [x][3x]3/[1220-2x]2

4.0*10-2 *[1220-2x]2=[x][3x]3

By solving this equation we get

X= 1.16

Therefore the equilibrium concentration of H2 = 3x = 3*1.16 = 3.48 M

The Haber reaction for the manufacture of ammonia is: N2 + 3H2 → 2NH3 Without doing any experiments, which of the following can you say MUST be true? The activation energy is positive. Disappearance rate of N2 = 3 (Disappearance rate of H2). Disappearance rate of H2 = 3 (Disappearance rate of N2). The reaction is not an elementary reaction. The reaction is first order in N2. Reaction rate = -Δ[N2]/Δt. Δ[H2]/Δt will have a positive value.
