Biases and judgment errors occur when the beliefs, values and attitudes of an evaluator distorts an objective performance appraisal process. Common forms of hiring and performance biases include:

  • Contrast – This occurs when the evaluator compares an employee’s performance to other employees instead of the company standard.
  • Halo – An employee is rated highly in all areas and perceived to be performing well because of one thing they do really well.
  • Horn – On the flip side, an employee maybe rated as a poor performer simply because of one thing they are not able to do well.
  • Leniency – In this case, an evaluator may give every employee or candidate a satisfactory rating, regardless of their performance.
  • Recency – The employee’s most recent behavior becomes the primary focus of the review.
