What policies could a nursing home institute to minimize the chances of residents becoming "institutionalized"?
One of the most important things that would make the nursing home institutionalized is its restricted time schedule. This would mean that there is time for everything which would make the inmates to become very monotonous as they would be running behind the ring of the bell for bathing, eating, sleeping etc. In order to overcome this, a home model should be introduced in which people would be able to do when they feel like doing it thus, feeling at home. Secondly, people would be expected to behave in a certain way which would limit them from being on their own. This would mean that the elderly would like to be listened to and when they are only spoken to, they would become more troubled. People in the nursing homes should be given opportunity to open up and talk to others without any restrictions in order to overcome their fear, doubts and struggles.
