Someone post from a discussion question...(Respond to it)

Meaningful Use was defined by the use of certified EHR technology in a meaningful manner, for example electronic prescribing; ensuring that the certified EHR technology connects in a manner that provides for the electronic exchange of health information to improve the quality of care. By using certified EHR technology, the provider must submit to the Secretary of Health & Human Services (HHS) information on the quality of care and other measures. The concept of meaningful use rested on the five pillars of health outcomes policy priorities, they are:

  1. Improving quality, safety, efficiency, and reducing health disparities
  2. Engage patients and families in their health
  3. Improve care coordination
  4. Improve population and public health
  5. Ensure adequate privacy and security protection for personal health information

An electronic health record (EHR) is that digital version of a patient’s paper chart which is based on real-time update, with patients being its focus of information. It is available to the authorized personnel in a very short period of time along with the safety being ensured as well. It is made with a wider view of patient’s care, besides maintaining the health records of the patients and their respective treatment histories thereupon. Hence it is a crucial arm of Health care IT system. It is important to understand the basic workflow of EHRs so that the Medical staff is in a better position to assess the patient even without dealing with the patient in the past. This is possible because of the fact that every detail pertaining to the patient’s medical history, the plans for their treatments undertaken, the dates for their immunization course, various allergies that the patients may suffer from, the radiological images and the lab test reports, etc., are included well in the EHRs. Therefore, to the Health care managers and to the Providers, it shall render an evidence-based tools’ accessibility with the view to make rational decisions upon treating the patients. Understanding the basic workflow shall further enable the Health care manager to manage the details with authority and sensitivity. The access can be limited as per the prescribed norms only when the workflow understood well and protocols are followed as per the same. In addition, most of workflow is automated and streamlined so understanding the same is easier yet comprehensive in nature. In this regard, with the above measures mentioned in the passage, to a health care manager, it shall assist in formulating the plans of treatment in association with the Health care providers in an inclusive way for patient’s care. It can further assist the Managers to coordinate with the Pharmacies attached with their Organization, availing of specialists in time, ensuring the lab treatments match the diagnosis of the patient’s diseases or injuries, etc.
