1. Describe the goals/aims of performing Value Engineering and Constructability reviews on a project, the main differences between both approaches, and the phase during which each of the reviews is performed (planning vs. design vs. construction).
Goals/Aims
The Value Engineering is a systematic process that follows the Job Plan.Value engineering is applied by a multidisciplinary team to improve the value of a project through the analysis of functions.
A Systematic effort is directed at analyzing requirements of :
Systems,Equipment,Facilities,Procedures
Constructability review is a structured review of the project and design documents to ensure that construction of project is feasible and that the design as represented in the plans and specifications or bridging documents is biddable and constructible in a safe manner.
Main Differences
The main objective of Value Engineering is to reduce the total life cycle cost of a facility where as constructability focuses on optimising the entire construction process.
Constructability review may act as a precursor for value engineering by providing information through the constructor input and from previous projects,to increase the effectiveness of VE.
VE is a brainstorming session where life cycle cost of alternatives are considered for system components while maintaining design function while CR is an integral part of project management and scheduling constrution experience to be integrated to project planning and design.
VE is usually performed during the starting of design phase where brainstorming and new ideas are taken
CR is best done at the final design stages where the work scope has been finalised. It should not be attempted before half of the design stage.
