You have two employment candidates for a marketing position. Both have similar educational backgrounds and certifications. However, the first candidate has 20 years of related experience while the second candidate has 6 years of similar experience.
The first candidate is asking for a competitive base salary plus one week extra vacation as part of the benefits package. The second candidate is asking for a competitive base salary plus a company smart phone (upgraded each year), and paid Internet service at home. The first candidate is willing to work a flexible schedule (nights, weekends, etc.), while the second candidate prefers to work remotely from home. Both are requesting to be included in the company's annual bonus plan.
Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper that includes the following:
Compare the direct and indirect compensation requests for each candidate.
As an HR professional, what do you think is the best hiring decision for the company and why?
Taking employment decision is one of the most toughest decisions in terms of an organization's perspective and as the options are more for a single position the challenge becomes difficult. The HR professionals possess a tough job at hand as they need to take the decision based on various parameters like the educational background, work experience, performance in the career, etc. and there will also be a level of expectation from the employee hired therefore the organization or rather the HR needs to be effective while hiring an employee because the hiring comes with a lot of associated factors. In this context there are two candidates for a single position and the decision needs to be taken wisely in order to be successful.
The educational background is the first asoect that needs to be compared and in this context both have the same educational background and also both if them possess the same set of certifications as well. If we look at the work experience of the candidates there is a major difference in which one person is having 20 years of experience while the other is having 6 years of experience. The background information about the candidates are complete and this needs evaluation for further analysis, now if we look at the expectations they have from the organizations then we will see that the senior employee expects a competitive salary along with a additional vacation of a week. The junior candidate expects a competitive salary and a smartphone with internet connection that needs to be reimbursed by the organization.
The most important aspect is klnow being evaluated and that is the attitude towards work which is actually important because at the end of the day performance of the employee is what matters. The senior candidate promises to be flexible in his way of doing work and he will even be available on weekends and odd times whenever required. The junior candidate will be remotely working from his home and may not be that much available at odd hours. I think this is the factors that may actually make a difference in the decision that we may take because this is important.
If we look at the direct compensation then the first part is the competitive salary and that should have a huge difference because the senior employee needs to be paid far more than the junior employees because their work experience differ so hiring the senior candidate will imply a higher cost to compnay. The indirect compensation includes the vacation of one week compared with the smartphone with free internet and if we look at both the factors it is not that clear that what will be the compensation be in terms of money so we consider both as equal. Now we know that hiring the senior candidate will incur.more cost to the company but it is also true that in a marketing position experience is something that always have an upper hand and the work attitude is another thing that will be important because in marketing flexibility is one of the most important factors which the senior candidate promises to provide but nothing is heard from the junior candidate regarding this.
As an HR professional I think that the best hiring decision would be the hiring of the senior candidate because even if the cost is more the perks and probability of success is also more.
