You are the manager of a clinical lab at large-sized hospital. Physicians and nurses are concerned about the early morning turnaround time for lab tests. It appears the samples are collected on the 6:00 A.M round. Physicians begin their patient rounds at 7:30 A.M and prefer to see the lab tests results at the time they see the patient so they can make decisions with regards to patient treatment
. 1. What is the best method to address this problem?
2. What mgmt. styles might be used?
3. Who should be included?
4. What decision-making tools would be used?
1) Being a clinical lab manager it is important for me to be a quick thinker and I will consult with the other staff and medical personnels that the necessary tools for lab tests are present or not. I will contact the suppliers if there is anything needed. I would also arrange effective meetings so that we can start our mission as soon as possible. Wandering around is also one of the good strategies to work better so I will do that because most of the time some staffs are not that free to share their problems in meetings so that they can tell me in person if I meet them. I will make sure everyone attends this. I will also check the laboratory reports and I will divide the work between staff members. Sincerity is really needed here. I will encourage them so that they can work faster. All methods are important here as each and every method plays a vital role.
2) I will follow the visionary style, I will not command as it is authoritative they might feel low and that will affect the work. Mobilizing them toward a project or vision is what I will do. Also, I will participate in the work and will ask everyone to cooperate. Health issues are matter of concern and I will see if they are emotionally involved or not.
3) Medical professionals will be included because test results are vital and monitoring, sample checking. analyzing these are included. Its about life.
