A typical drywall finisher works 45 hours per week for 16 weeks of the year and 40 hour per week for 32 weeks of the year, and gets 4 weeks off in the form of vacation, holidays, and sick leave (for which the drywall finishers are paid for 40 hours per week). The typical drywall finisher is paid $25.78 per hour. The employer must comply with the overtime requirements in the Fair Labor Standards Act. Determine the wages paid to a typical drywall finisher and the number of billable hours during a one-year period. Assume that all hours are billable except holidays, vacation, and sick leave
We know that there are total of 52 weeks in a year.
Given, a drywall finisher works:
45 hrs./week ----> 16 weeks ---------------------(1)
40 hrs./week ----> 32 weeks ---------------------(2)
He gets 4 weeks off in the form of vacation, holidays, and sick leave. But it is given that he is paid for 40 hrs./week
So, total number of weeks for work of 40 hrs/week are 32 weeks + 4 weeks = 36 weeks
Given, he is paid $25.78/hour:
Total number of biilable (working) hours = (45 16) + [ (40 32) + (40 4) ] [ from (1) and (2) ]
= 720 + 1280 + 160
= 2160 hrs.
Hence, total no. of billable hours, during a one year period is 2160 hours.
Total wage paid to the finisher for one year = 2160 hrs. $25.78/hour
= $55,684.80
Hence, total wage payble to the finisher is $55684.80
