You are talking to a friend who insists that the seasons are caused by a varying Earth-Sun distance over the course of a year. What other fact does your friend likely know that completely contradicts this view of how the seasons are caused? Can you think of other examples of two beliefs that many people feel are both true but which completely contradict each other? How does science view this situation?

Our year is devided in four season summer,,winter, spring, autumun generally it is warmer in spring and summer where as it is cooler in winter and autumn and when you ask the people why it is cold in autumn and winter or why it feels hotter in summer then they most likely say that in winter earth is farther from sun and in summer earth is closer to sun that is why they are feelling such weather by using their common sense as we get closer to fire we feel hotter and if we move away from the fire then it feels colder.

But interesting fact is that they are coming to wrong conclusion .Earth is farthest from sun in july and closest in december.also if it is matter of distance then northern hemisphere and southern hemispher get summer and winter simultaniously but in realilty whenver there is summer in northern hemisphere then there is winter in southern hemisphere and when it is winter in northern hemisphere than there will be summer in southern hemisphere.

The biggest reason for season is that earth have tilted axis relative to orbital plane and due to which earth gets nearly vertical sun rays in summer in tropics due to which earths tempereature goes up in summer and spring. whereas In winter sun rays are slanted and due to which net intensity of sun rays decrease and hence temperature of earth goes down and it feels colder in winter and autumn.
