Mr. Winn wants to teach his third grade students to use a
three-step process for summarizing as they read. He believes
observational learning is the best method.
Albert Bandura identified four elements essential for observational
learning. Explain what Mr. Winn needs to do for each element to be
incorporated into his teaching plan for this lesson.
Observational learning is a method whereby learning occurs by observing the activities of other individuals. Observational learning is the major component of Albert Bandura's Social learning theory, he illustrated the method of observational learning with the help of famous Bobo doll experiment. Further Bandura stressed four elements essential in the process of effective observational learning:
? Attention
? Retention
? Reproduction
? .Motivation
Mr.Winn with the use of observational learning techniques can improve the students performance, enhance their motivation level and self perception.
Application of observational learning elements in the classroom of Mr.Winn in the following way will prove to be effective for his teaching plan:
? Role playing- Role playing is the technique that works well with the students. Mr. Winn can assign respective roles to the students and have them act out in the class. In this manner the students will pay a close attention at their own roles and at the roles of others as well because in order of learning to be effective first element is attention which can be accomplished by attractive models of learning.
? Mind mapping- Mr.Winn can have one student to draw diagrams and models on the board while others may suggest and help through ideas. In this way summarizing the learned material and memorising it will be effective for students.
? Reproduction- No learning is complete without it's action so for this Mr.Winn can have class test, quizzes, and group discussion in the class to test whether what is being learned is effective or not, it will also help him to summarize the concepts learned by students.
? Motivation- This step involves reinforcing the desirable behavior in the case of classroom learning Mr.Winn can motivate students by many positive reinforcements such as rewarding them.
In this way Mr.Winn can incorporate four elements of observational learning in designing his learning methods for the students.
