What are the factors affect coagulation and flocculation process?
Hope it helps.
Coagulation and flocculation process are essential for the wastewater treatment plant. Coagulation is a process in which liquid changes to solid or semi solid state by the use of some coagulants. In other hand, the process of separting solid particle and accumulate them in the form of loose soft flake is known as flocculation.
These two processes are used to remove turbity, pathogens, algae, color and suspended particles present in water
Now the factor which affect these processes are-
-Type of coagulant aids which are used to improve coagulation, works good for slow settling flocs. It accelerate the process in slow settling floc (example- Polyelectolyte)
-Chemical used in this process (filter alum, black alum, activate alum, ferric sulfate, ferrous sulfate, sodium aluminate etc.) .Alum works effectively in hard water and high alkalinity but has narrow ph range
-Ph- Required high Ph for the process. As alum has low pH range so we need to add lime to it,
-Alkalinity is OH- ion which is used for the formation of floc and it also affects the process.
-Temperature -Higher temperature is required for fast coagulation, lower the temperature slower will be the process.
- Time- detention time for flash mixer is 60 sec and 20-30 min for flocculator which not be lesser or higher than the range.
-Velocity: It varries with the process as rapid mixing for coagulation and slow mixing for flocculation.
