Q. During a major storm seawater has entered the cable conduit for a tidal power station. The seawater may have damaged the insulation greatly increasing the likelihood of a short circuit. The power company needs to decide whether or not to replace the cables in the conduit. If there is a short circuit then the whole conduit will be seriously damaged and need to be reconstructed. The cost of replacing the cables is $30 000. The cost of replacing the complete conduit is $500 000. If the cable is not replaced the probability of a short circuit occurring is estimated to be 0.1. If it is replaced this drop to 0.000 01. It is possible to send a remote camera through the conduit to inspect the cable at a cost of $5 000. This inspection is not 100% accurate in detecting damage and so P(The inspection detects damage | A short circuit will occur) = 0.9 P(The inspection detects damage | A short circuit will not occur) = 0.05 a) Draw the decision tree for this situation. b) Determine the remaining required probabilities and mark clearly on your tree. c) Determine the best course of action to follow.

A tidal power plant of single-basin type, has a basin area of (24+n1000) km2. The tide has a range of 10 m. The turbine stops when the head on it falls below 3m. Calcualte the average power generated during one filling/emptying proces in MW. Assume the turbine-generator efficiency is 70% and the time taken as 22350 seconds. Take sea water density = 1025 kg/m3. n=57

A C-band station has an antenna with a transponder gain of 54dB.The transmitter output power is set to 100 W at a frequency of 6.10 GHz. The signal is received by a satellite at a distance of 37,500 km through an antenna with diameter of 6m. The signal is then routed to a transponder with a noise bandwidth of 36 MHz, and a gain of 110dB 1. Calculate the path loss. 2. Calculate power at the output port of the...

A group is considering installing a solar power station and has asked you for your recommendation for a photovoltaic system or a solar thermal system. At this stage you are asked not to include cost factors. The single point design condition they have given you is for an incident solar radiation on the collector of 550 W/m2, a surrounding temperature of 18 C. The dead state for this problem should be taken as To = 291 K, Po = 1...

: The US has just entered a major recession. Please describe what will happen as the US Government uses Expansionary Fiscal Policy to aid the economy. Assume that the marginal propensity to expend is 0.9 and therefore the multiplier is 10. According to the multiplier model, an increase in autonomous consumption of 200 would raise the equilibrium level of income by 2000. 1) Explain how the multiplier process amplifies the initial shift in autonomous expenditures. 2) Had the MPE only...
