Tablet computers are rapidly becoming more mainstream and replacing traditional desktop and laptop computers with the first IPAD becoming available in 2010 and an assortment of Linux and Windows-based tablets following. How do you believe that tablet computers have changed or contributed to the ways Forensic Scientists have to think or function on a daily basis? Do you believe that tablet computers have made a Forensic Scientist's job easier or harder? Can you think of any other technologies that have become mainstream in the last 6 years that would have an impact on a Forensic Scientist's job responsibilities? Why?

A tablet computer, commonly shortened to tablet, is a mobile device, typically with a mobile operating system and touchscreen display processing circuitry, and a rechargeable battery in a single, thin and flat package. Tablets, being computers, do what other personal computers do, but lack some input/output (I/O) abilities that others have. Modern tablets largely resemble modern smartphones, the only differences being that tablets are relatively larger than smartphones, with screens 7 inches (18 cm) or larger, measured diagonally, and may not support access to a cellular network.

Tablet used in forensic scientist:----

Tablet forensics, also known as tablet forensic science, falls under the broader field of digital forensic science. It has to do with the legal evidence that can be found on tablet and other media with digital storage means. Tablet forensic specialists are able to use forensically sound methods to identify, preserve and analyze information found in order to assess and determine facts about such information. The evidence discovered is used in both criminal and civil investigations and is widely accepted in various courts. It is used to provide evidence in crimes such as child pornography, rape, murder, cyberstalking, espionage and fraud.

Forensic techniques are used to examine an electronic device such as a tablet and determine its content, as well as it method of use. The storage mechanisms, like drives and memory, as well as the electronic documents, such as email and JPEGS, are examined. Information is retrieved and events are traced, putting together timelines and situational recreations.

Tablet forensics (also known as tablet forensic science) is a branch of digital forensic science pertaining to evidence found in tablet and digital storage media. The goal of tablet forensics is to examine digital media in a forensically sound manner with the aim of identifying, preserving, recovering, analyzing and presenting facts and opinions about the digital information.

Digital forensics jobs make easy to forensic scientist:--

  1. Computer Forensics – the identification, preservation, collection, analysis and reporting on evidence found on computers, laptops and storage media in support of investigations and legal proceedings.
  2. Network Forensics – the monitoring, capture, storing and analysis of network activities or events in order to discover the source of security attacks, intrusions or other problem incidents, i.e. worms, virus or malware attacks, abnormal network traffic and security breaches.
  3. Mobile Devices Forensics – the recovery of electronic evidence from mobile phones, smartphones, SIM cards, PDAs, GPS devices, tablets and game consoles.
  4. Digital Image Forensics – the extraction and analysis of digitally acquired photographic images to validate their authenticity by recovering the metadata of the image file to ascertain its history.
  5. Digital Video/Audio Forensics – the collection, analysis and evaluation of sound and video recordings. The science is the establishment of authenticity as to whether a recording is original and whether it has been tampered with, either maliciously or accidentally.
  6. Memory forensics – the recovery of evidence from the RAM of a running computer, also called live acquisition

In today life AI having is the new technology which is used by forensic scientist:------

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a well-established area that facilitates dealing with computationally complex and large problems. As the process of digital forensics requires analyzing a large amount of complex data; therefore, AI is considered to be an ideal approach for dealing with several issues and challenges currently existing in digital forensics. Among the most important concepts in different AI systems are associated with the ontology, representation and structuring of knowledge. AI has the potential for providing the necessary expertise and helps in the standardization, management and exchange of a large amount of data, information and knowledge in the forensic domain. The existing digital forensic systems are not efficient to save and store all these multiple formats of data and are not enough to handle such vast and complex data thus they do require human interaction which means the chances of delay and errors exist. But with the innovation of machine learning, this occurrence of error or delay can be prevented. The system is designed in a way that it can help detect errors but in a much faster pace and with accuracy. Several types of research have highlighted the role of different AI techniques and their benefits in providing a framework for storing and analyzing digital evidence. Among these AI techniques include machine learning (ML), NLP, speech and image detection recognition while each of these techniques has its own benefits. For instance, ML provides systems with the ability of learning and improving without being clearly programmed, such as image processing and medical diagnosis. Furthermore, NLP techniques help in extracting the information from textual data such as in the process of file fragmentation.
