In sexually reproducing population genetic variation is resulted by homologous recombination between the chromosomes during gamete fusion or fertilization. The male and female gametes fused to produce the zygote. During zygote formation, the reduction division or meiosis takes place. During, meiosis the homologous chromosomes undergo recombination by crossing over and exchange the chromosomal segments. The process of crossing over takes place during prophase I of meiosis I.
