a Write the set of quantum numbers of an electron in 3s orbital.
Hint: The quantum numbers include n, l, ml and ms.
b. What is the l value of a d orbital? Write the possible m, values for a d orbital.
c. Determine the number of allowed subshells (different values of l) for the principal quantum level n = 4. Write the designation of each subshell (s, p, d, or f)
a. 3s
for 3s orbital , n=3; l=0; ml= 0 and ms= +1/2 or -1/2
b.
the l value for d orbital is l=2 (note l=0 s-orbital ;l=1 p orbital)
the possible ml values are -l to +l and zero
i.e -2; -1 ; 0 ; +1 ; +2
c.
for n=4 the allowed sub shell are
l= 0 to n-1
or 0 , 1 , 2, 3
l=0 ; S-subshell
l=1; p-subshell
l=2 ; d-subshell
l=3; f-subshell
