A grit chamber is designed to treat an average wastewater flow of 1 m3/sec at an overflow rate of 4752 m3/m2 –d to capture sand with the following particle size distribution:

         % by wt.                        Diameter (mm)

               30                                         1.0

               30                                         0.5

               30                                         0.2

               10                                         0.1

The design overflow rate is such that 100% removal of the 0.5 mm diameter particles will be achieved. The operating temperature is 20°C and the specific gravity of the sand particles is 2.65. Assume that the stickiness coefficient (k) for sand is 0.04 and the Darcy-Weisbach friction factor (f) is 0.03.

a. Determine the surface area and vertical cross-sectional area of the grit chamber if only the 0.1 mm diameter particles will be scoured away

b. Calculate the removal efficiency assuming that only the 0.1 mm diameter particles will be

     scoured away.

c. If the ratio of peak to average flow is 1.4, calculate the overall removal efficiency at the      peak flow.

Q3. Flow velocity of wastewater approaching a Grit chamber is 10cm/s. Design the grit chamber with appropriate Free board and a proportionate flow weir at its outlet to handle a sewage flow from a Population of 44,000 with a per capita water consumption of 250 liters/day. It has to handle maximum flow 2 times the average flow. Depth = 1.5m Length of grit chamber is limited to 8m and it cannot hold water more than 1.5 minutes.

A domestic wastewater with a flow of 1700 m3 / day will be treated in a biological treatment plant. Wastewater pre-settling tank effluent BOD value is 350 mg / L. If the volume of the biological reactor (ventilation reactor) is 500 m3, do you prefer a fully mixed or plug-flow reactor? Please explain the reasons.

Please determine the dimensions and air flowrate required for a 3m deep aerated grit chamber designed to remove 70% of 0.02 cm diameter sand [specific gravity = 2.65] at 20ºC. Assume that only particles of 0.001 cm will be scoured away. The wastewater flow rate is 10000 m3/d. Use a b of 0.04 and f of 0.03 for calculations.

A new wastewater treatment plant was built to treat the wastewater flow 800,000 gpd. The capital cost to build the wastewater treatment plant was $6,000,000. The annual operation and maintenance costs of operating the plant is $700,000/year. Estimate the cost of treating 1000 gallons of wastewater ($/1000 gallon). The total flow at a wastewater treatment plant is 682 m3/day. The purpose of the plant is to remove compound Z from the wastewater by treating it in reactors, using a newly developed microbial process. Assume the microbial treatment can be modeled as a first order reaction with a rate coefficient of 0.36/h. Suppose the flow is split evenly and treated in two parallel reactors– one complete mix and one plug flow -- each with a volume of 88 x...

The Wilson Wastewater Treatment Plant currently provides primary treatment for a flow rate of 2500 m3/day. The effluent from the primary tank has a soluble BOD5= 240 mg/L. You need to design an activated sludge treatment to update the plant. The secondary effluent standards to meet are 25.0 mg/L BOD5 total (suspended and soluble BOD) and 30 mg/L suspended solids. Use the following assumptions: Target soluble BOD5 in the effluent of the secondary treatment is 2.5 mg/L. Growth constants can...

The Lolla Hart hospital has a small activated sludge plant to treat its wastewater. The average daily hospital discharge is 1,500 L per day per bed, and the average soluble BOD5 after primary settling is 500 mg/L. Their permit dictates that the effluent BOD5 and TSS cannot exceed 30 and 20 mg/L, respectively, on an annual basis. Assume the MLVSS concentration in the aeration basin will be maintained at 3,000 mg/L. Also, assume that the concentration of BOD5 of the...
