Describe how the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan brought about social movements through relative deprivation and resource mobilization in both the United States and Afghanistan.
During Invasion, Afghan state failed to secure inclusiveness, failed to deliver security and justice, failed to prevent corruption and address the issues of war crimes and control the drug trade. On being interview many Afghans complained that the police is stealing from ordinary people: “Forget about the people, our biggest problem are with the police". (truck driver reported by A Wilder,2007).
Public support for deployment to Afghanistan in countries in Germany and Canada evaporated.
The war crippled Afghan's healthcare system, destroyed its limited economic infrastructure. Education system became non existent
In late 2001 the security council authorized the U.S. and its NATO allies to set up the International security Assistance force (ISAF) to provide military support for new pro-western government. In March 2002, the council established the United Nation Assistance Mission for Afghanistan( UNAMA) for the management of all humanitarian, relief , recovery activities. Despite these initiatives Afghanistan failed to improve as a state.
American Military suffered immensely. In 2012 alone, more than 60 American and NATO troops were killed by fellow Afghan soldiers- killed by the very people they trained.
In June, 2017, President Trump authorized sending 3000-5000 more troops to strengthen training there. Trump’s strategy is not very different from his predecessors. He campaigned on withdrawing completely but that would allow Taliban and terrorists to fill the void-the New York times, August 21, 2017.
