write an article on application of Fly ash( silica fume) in concrete.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Fly ash is generated in combustion of coal in fine grey powder. It's spherical in shape. Fly ash is pozzalonic properties as a product from industrial plants using pulverized coal and lignite as fuel.

It is defined into two classes:

1.class F

It is produced from bituminous coal. It contains Lime( less than 20% )and silica, alumina, iron( greater than 70%).

2.class C

It is produced from sub-bituminous coal.it contains lime (greater than 20%).

Fly ash in concrete:

1.it Reduce Water content

2.it improve Workability

3. It reduce segregation

4.it improves pumpability

5.it improve finishing

6.low heat of hydration

7.Lower drying shrinkage

8.Improved long term strength

9. Redused efflorescence

10.Good combination protection

11.Low chloride ingress

12.Decreases permeability

13.Increases durability

14.Improved resistance to alkali silica reactivity and sulfate attack.

Fly ash holds a vast potential for improving the Modern day concrete when it comes to quality in long term. In spite of being industrial waste,it can improve durability and reduce heat of hydration and give more strength to concrete.

Silica fume is different from fly ash, it is generated from electric arc furnaces as a by product.it contains high SiO2, extreamly small size particle with large surface area.

Silica fume in concrete:

1.It gives high strength to concrete.

2.Water damand increase

3.No bleeding of concrete

4.Reduced permeability

5.Increases plastic shrinkage

6.Increases chloride permeability

7.High range of water reducers are required

8.Replace Portland cement it leads to Reduction of Co2

In a study of pulverized fuel-ash concrete mix, it was found that the sample mean compressive strength was 27.0 with a standard deviation of 4.89 for a sample of 68 specimens which had been aged for 7 days. A sample of 74 specimens which had been aged for 28 days yielded a mean compressive strength of 35.8 with standard deviation 6.43. Is there strong evidence that mean compressive strength is higher after 28 days than after 7 days? Yes, because...

Electrostatic precipitator question, I'm designing an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) to capture the particulate matter(fly ash) from flue gas at 130C that exits from a coal-fired power plant. My question is: how can i increase the efficiency of the electrostatic precepitator without conditioning the flue gas (ie. injecting so3 or ammonia or water)? what are the alternative ways to increase the efficiency of the ESP? please show references with solution. Thanks

It essential that the population of rebars to be used in a lightweight concrete application should have a yield strength of 17 psi. From the rebars delivered to the construction site by the supplier, the engineer ordered that a sample of 10 rebars to be randomly selected and tested for yield strength. The sample of 10 rebars yielded a value of 15.9 psi. Suppose it is known that yield strength is normally distributed and the variance of rebar strength is...

A study investigated the compressive strength of concrete when mixed with fly ash.Nine random samples were taken. The population variance is unknown and assumed normal. The sample mean compressive strength x̅ = 25.12 psi and the sample standard deviation s = 8.42 psi. Find a 99% lower one-sided confidence interval on mean compressive strength.
