The most common form of Down syndrome is known as Trisomy 21, which is when chromosome number 21 receives an extra copy through nondisjunction. This leads to each cell having a total of 47 chromosomes, and while people living with Down syndrome lead long, happy lives, they can experience abnormalities in their physical growth, cognitive capabilities, and are sometimes at greater risk in terms of health.
Which cell checkpoint in the cell cycle would need to malfunction for nondisjunction to be most likely to occur, and why?
