There are many literary elements when it comes to literature such as plot , character, foreshadowing, point of view ,theme , setting , conflict , tone, pacing, patterns, dialogue, metaphors etc etc . These elements together integrate with each other and form a literature piece .Let us three of them one by one
Theme - There are a number of themes used by Shakespeare in Romeo and Juliet . Themes of romantic love , death , individual vs society debate, patriarchy , violence are some of the themes used in Romeo and Juliet . We can take examples of Romantic love and how the love the two individuals have towards each other overcomes all the constraints by the society . The love they had was abiding in nature. One more theme is violence play . It plays a very important role in the play . Sucide of Romeo and Juliet and Romeo killing Tybalt are some examples of violence used in the play.
Metaphor - Metaphor can be defined as comparison which is implicit in nature between two things which are mostly unrelated . The example of metaphor from the play is when Benovolio draws a comparison between the sun and the golden east window. It shows how the bright sunlight brings opportunities and also it shows the life giving qualities of the sun .
Foreshadowing - This technique helps to generate the viewer's interest. It provides hints to the viewers about an upcoming event. An example from the play is the prologue which is in the very beginning which clearly foreshadows the vital events of Romeo and Juliet . A more clear and definitive example of foreshadowing is the Suciide which takes place in the play . The chorus which is part of the prelogue has already predicted the douible suicide commited by the two lovers . Also there is a term called star crossed in the play which is concerned with the role of fate and how it will contribute to the death of Romeo and Juliet .
