The ion channels are gated , which will allow them to open briefly , then again close .These gate channels open to specific types of stimulus .the main types of stimulus that are known to cause them to open briefly are voltage gated channles , , mechanical gated channales and other is ligand gated channales or binding of the ligand gated channales .the ligand can be either a extracellular mediator especially neurotransmitter {transmitter gated channales} ,or an intracellular mediator such as ion [ ion gated channels] , nucleotide gated channels .

the transmitter gated ion channels , the receptors that are highly selective binding site for the neurotransmitter which are released from presynaptic nerve terminal , these cause openming of the cation channels ,causing the influx of the sodium ions that depolarises the postsynaptic memberane towards the threshold for firing the action potential ,which causes the stimulus to move forward the neuron .
