How can something be rewarding, but without being satisfying? Describe what that would be like.
This can happen in some specific scenarios where reward is not meeting the expectation of a person. For example, a person working in an organization has performed something great for a company and he believes that in the appraisal cycle, his salary will be increased as per his satisfaction level and he would be given promotion for his achievement.
But during appraisal, his salary is just increased and he is not awarded promotion. So, in this case, this reward will not meet his expectation level. And thus, he will not be satisfied.
In a teleological ethics, would reward and satisfaction/contentment/meaning always go together.
Yes, in a teleological ethics, reward and satisfaction always go together.
Reason:
Teleological ethics is a theory of morality that derives duty or moral obligation from what is good or desirable as an end to be achieved.
For example: Generally, we consider stealing bad, but a teleological thinker may say, “but in the end, I'm stealing money to feed my family, which is good, so the action is good.” In other words, an action's “goodness” is based off the outcome.
This implies that the reward (money) and satisfaction(feeding the family) which a person is deriving from stealing the money goes together for a teleological person.
