What is exponential growth? What consequences can we expect if U.S. population growth and energy consumption continue to grow exponentially? What are renewable energy sources and how can using renewable energy to generate electricity help alleviate this problem?

Solutions

Expert Solution

In expontial growth the rate of change of the value of a function is proportional to the function's current value.

k is proportanility constant.

On integration it gives

Hence such a function N is exponentially growing.

If U.S. population growth and energy consumption continue to grow exponentially then sorce of energy will decay exponentially. Currently used non renewable energy sorces (i.e. sources which are naturally replenished) such as coal, petrolium will dimnished.

Renewable energyre source are those sources which cam be replenishes naturally such as water, wind, sunlight etc. Thsese sources are helpful to overcome resource depletion caused by usage and consumption. Potential energy of water is used to move blade of turbine. This mechanical work is further converted into electric energy. Similarly wind energy is also used to produce electrical energy via mechanical energy of wind mill. Sunlight is used in solar panel to produced electricity.

3. All else being equal, one would expect the energy consumption to be related to the amount of CO2 emissions. The energy consumption of buildings per unit area per unit time is measured as energy use intensity given in MJ/ft2/year. The CO2 emissions are measured in metric tons per capita per year (T/person/year). The data on the building energy consumption and CO2 emissions values for a sample of 15 zip-codes is shown in the table below           a.    Find the...
