  1. Consider a pair of 3/8 in welds that are each 10 in long. Determine the strength if these two welds if:
    1. They are loaded parallel to their length
    2. They are loaded perpendicular to their length

Do not consider simplifying assumptions

  1. Consider an L5x3x1/2 supporting 45 kip dead load and 30 kip live load. It is being welded to an ASTM A36 PL5/8x8. Design and proportion the weld to make this a simple welded connection. The leg of the weld should be the average of the minimum and maximum size.  the 5 in leg of the angle is connected to the plate.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The strength of the welds remain the same whether they are load parallel to the lengths or perpendicular to the lengths.

Design strength = te (0.6 FEXX) L= 0.75 x (0.707 x 3/8) x (0.6 x 70 ) x (10+10) = 167.03 kips
