1. What pH would you expect for pure, freshly distilled water?
2. CO2 can dissolve into the water by the reaction below. By analyzing these products, would you expect pure water left out in the air to become acidic or basic?
CO2 (g) + H2O (l) ⟶ H2CO3 (aq)
3. Using the pHet simulation above, identify two acidic solutions and two basic solutions. Write the pH of the solutions that you identified.
Select the 'coffee' option from the dropdown menu and add ~0.10 L
of coffee solution.
4. Measure the pH of the coffee solution and then start adding water to the beaker until the volume is 1.20 L. What happens to the pH as you add water? Explain why this occurs.
5. Using the knob at the bottom left of the beaker, let the solution drain out until the volume is 0.50 L. What happens to the pH? Explain why the pH is not changing. Make sure to discuss solute and solvent in your answer.
6. Select blood from the dropdown slider and add 0.10 L to the beaker. Then, add water until the beaker is full (1.20 L). Describe what happens to the pH as you fill-up the beaker. Is the pH changing faster or slower than it did with the coffee sample? Why? (Hint: Think about the pH of the water that you are adding)
7. Using your knowledge of dilution, make a solution of battery acid with a pH that is above 3.40. Describe how you made this solution.
