Can I please get an understanding to benchmarking in healthcare, thanks

We are always comparing one thing to another to see if it is somehow better. Whether we know it or not, this practice has a name. It is called benchmarking and that is the topic of this week’s discussion. Discuss what the actual term means. What is the purpose of this technique? Discuss what benchmarking isn’t? Discuss the 5 phases of benchmarking. Do you feel this is a useful tool for a healthcare manager? Why or why not?

answer-

BENCHMARKING-

what the actual term means-

Benchmarking is the process of setting the standards of excellence & quality in the organization & compare the actual activities of healthcare organization with the set standards.

this process helps the healthcare organizations to o reduce expenses and simultaneously improve product and service quality

What is the purpose of this technique?

benchmarking helps in setting standards, best practices, and evidence-based practices and then identifying potential areas of improvement

following are some purposes of using this technique-

  • to improve efficiency
  • to improve quality of care
  • improve patient safety and patient satisfaction.

Discuss what benchmarking isn’t?

benchmarking is not copy or stealing the process but it is a open, honest & legal study of another organization or business practices.it is not stopping process because it requires continous operation in organization.

Discuss the 5 phases of benchmarking. Do you feel this is a useful tool for a healthcare manager? Why or why not?

five pahses of benchmarking are-

  1. Planning means what to benchmark
  2. Analysing means undertand the competitor
  3. Integrating means support from top management by integration of goals
  4. Acting or Action means implement the plan to action
  5. Maturity means when this process shows the expected outcomes like improved performance, quality & minimised cost etc.

yes this very useful tool for a healthcare manager because it would allow the manager to make decisions based on the benchmarks that which are is lacking & need improvement & which area is improving in terms of efficiency, quality care to patient, cost effective operations in health care etc.

* above answer is written in my own words.hope this answer would help you.good luck.
