Since the Laptop was stolen for that all data is no longer available to john  for physical access of the data. In future if  john follows some prerequisite steps he can overcome this problem even if the physical device was lost, these prerequisite steps are follows :

• Storing your required documents on a portable storage drive or pen drive in the encrypt format which is the conversion of electronic data into another form that can only be understood by authorized user’s.

• An authorization safety method involves biometric systems, using the classic identification using fingerprints can restrict the unauthorized access of data even if the laptop was stolen.
• You can Switch to a cloud- or server-based email platform which save data in the “cloud”, your files saved from anywhere, accessible anywhere when you want to access
• Self-Hosted Cloud Storage option is also available.
• Software like Prey or LoJack need to be installed in  your device which facilitated to  recovery of your laptop .you able to track the location of your stolen device,
