Why qualities are you/would you seek in a Board member? Explain why

Solutions

Expert Solution

The qualities I would want in a board member are:

  • A passion for the business that we are dealing with.
  • A desire to attend the meetings
  • Someone who prepares in advance for the board meetings.
  • Very supportive of the decisions but also able to give positive criticism.
  • A willingness to learn.
  • Leadership qualities that would be useful in the firm
  • Someone who is discrete and values confidential information

The rationale for the above qualities: The reason why I would seek these qualities are i. When an individual has a passion for the business, the meetings are more productive as they can suggest better ideas and help in making good decisions ii. When an individual ensures that they attend every meeting, they are up to date with the state of the business and aware of the processes. iii. It is always beneficial to have someone who prepares in advance for the board meetings as they bring in details that would help the business overall and the discussions as well. iv. When someone points out the flaws in decisions with good alternative you want such individuals to be a part of the board members, instead of someone who just nods the head for every decision. v. Mindset plays a vital role in businesses and the knowledge doesn't necessarily make an impact but an individual who has the willingness to learn can be a positive influence for the board. vi. The most important quality of all is someone who is discrete as confidential information on the board needs to stay within the group and one who is able to handle such information is an asset.
