Motivation, especially in today’s business landscape is represented as a function of both the internal and external factors that create the necessary drive and engagement and make use of the necessary aspects of performance in order to create a better understanding and planning for the future goals of the individual.

In order to create a motivating work environment, we need to consider motivation on the basis of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Maslow was able to identify that there are needs at different levels that an individual achieves and then climbs a higher-level structure in order to then chase the higher-level needs. This means that while the basic needs of security and a wage would be enough motivation at the beginning of an individual’s career, the consideration for higher-order skills and therefore, the morale to perform would be limited if that is the leader’s main area of focus. In order to make motivation high, we need to consider engagement over any other form of external motivation such as benefits and compensation, since internal motivation and drive have repeatedly shown to outperform external motivation over the long term. Now, as a leader, we will focus on task matching, decision-making autonomy, and allowing individuals to make their own mistakes in order to learn from it, gain experience, and cater to their overall development. This leads to the individuals being engaged because they believe their growth is being catered to and the fact that they have been given decision making autonomy means that their efforts are being recognized. The leader can also encourage group participation and allow for a synergistic approach to creativity and problem-solving that builds motivation when viewed through a long-term lens.
