Compare and contrast emic and etic models of multiculturalism.
(1)Emic model is from within the social group (from the perspective of the subject) and etic model is from outside (from the perspective of the observer).
(2)The etic model of multiculturalism focuses on developing theories that can be applied universally and on testing the generalizability of theories across diverse groups. In contrast, the emic approach focuses on developing theories specific to an individual cultural group or on identifying culturally specific factors.
(3)The emic model – the insider's or native's perspective of reality – is at the heart of most ethnographic research. The insider's perception of reality is instrumental to understanding and accurately describing situations and behaviors.
(4)The etic model makes use of conceptual categories and disciplinary knowledge as the basis for understanding a particular setting or study.
Are there times when it is better to have one perspective over the other?
Yes, there are times when one perspective is better than other.
Defend your position.
Reason: In some situations, emic perspective compels the recognition and acceptance of multiple realities. And then, documenting multiple perspectives of reality in a given study is crucial to an understanding of why people think and act in the different ways they do.
While in some situations, etic perspective helps to understand universality of behaviors.
