Compare and contrast the Tyler and Taba models of curriculum development

Expert Solution

As we know that, curriculum is an essential component of the education. According to Cunningham " Curriculum is the tool in the hands of the artist (teacher) to mould his material (students) according to his ideals in his studio (school). A curriculum is important in an educational system. It helps one plan the education process or procedure for a given period of time (a term, session, lesson period etc). Hence for a society to achieve its educational goals, it needs a curriculum that is functional and relevant to its needs.

We know that Curriculum development can be defined as the step-by-step process used to create positive improvements in the courses offered by a school, college or university. The world changes every day and new discoveries have to be roped into the education curricula.

There are two important models of curriculum development. Both of these models play an important role in curriculum development. Two major curriculum models are the Taba and Tyler methods. Each emphasizes teacher planning and assessment. The Tyler model focuses on four questions to shape curriculum, and the Taba model is more focused on teacher input. Both models are reflected in most classrooms today.

Both of these models Tyler's and Taba's are linear in design. Tyler's model is deductive and Taba's is inductive. Linear models are not curricular models that follow procedural steps. While Taba's model is more student friendly and is less time consuming, integrates standards and structure. Hilda Taba created a multi-purpose teaching model that utilizes the use of multiple processes: listing, grouping, labeling, regrouping, and synthesizing. The Tyler's model focus on  four sections focus on setting objectives, selecting learning experiences, organizing instruction, and evaluating progress.
