A.

A standard galvanic cell is constructed with Cr3+|Cr and Ag+|Ag half cell compartments connected by a salt bridge. Which of the following statements are correct?

Hint: Refer to a table of standard reduction potentials.

(Choose all that apply.)

1.As the cell runs, anions will migrate from the Cr3+|Cr compartment to the Ag+|Ag compartment.

2.The anode compartment is the Ag+|Ag compartment.

3.Ag is oxidized at the anode.

4.Cr is oxidized at the anode.

5.In the external circuit, electrons flow from the Cr3+|Cr compartment to the Ag+|Ag compartment.

B.

A standard galvanic cell is constructed with Cu2+ | Cu and Zn2+ | Zn half cell compartments connected by a salt bridge. Which of the following statements are correct?

Hint: Refer to a table of standard reduction potentials.

(Choose all that apply.)

1.Zn2+ is reduced at the cathode.

2.The cathode compartment is the Cu2+|Cu compartment.

3.As the cell runs, anions will migrate from the Cu2+|Cu compartment to the Zn2+|Zn compartment.

4.In the external circuit, electrons flow from the Cu2+|Cu compartment to the Zn2+|Zn compartment.

5.Cu2+ is reduced at the cathode.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Part-A

the cell will be represented as

Cr(s) | Cr+3(aq.) || Ag+ (aq.)  | Ag (s)

According to Standered Reduction potential series

as the oxdation potential of Cr is greater than Ag

or Reduction potential of Ag is greater than Cr

So Cr will oxidize at anode as Cr ----> Cr3+ + 3e - these three electrons will be moves towards cathode throgh the external circuitaccepted by Ag+ at cathode

so option 4 and 5th are correct

Part-B

the cell will be represented as

Zn (s) | Zn2+ (aq.) || Cu 2+(aq.) | Cu(s)

According to Standered Reduction potential series

as the oxdation potential of Zn is greater than Cu

or Reduction potential of Cu is greater than Zn

so Zn will be oxidize at anode and Cu will be reduced at cathode

Zn will be oxidize as Zn(s) -----> Zn 2+ (aq) + 2e -

this 2e- will be moves towards cathode throught the external circuit by which reduction of Cu will be take place as Cu 2+ (aq) + 2e - -------> Cu (s)

so option 2nd and 5th are correct

i hope you are satisfied with the answer kindally thumbs up
