What is the pH of 0.65 M lactic acid? Construct and use an ICE table. Use appropriate assumptions and test those assumptions. If an assumption is false redo the problem without the false assumption.

Please use an ICE table if you don't mind..

Solutions

Expert Solution

             CH3CH(OH)COOH ------------------------------> CH3CH(OH)COO^-   + H^+

      I           0.65                                                                   0                            0

      C           -x                                                                      +x                           +x

      E          0.65-x                                                                +x                           +x

                        Ka      = [CH3CH(OH)COO^-][H^+]/CH3CH(OH)COOH]

                        1.38*10^-4   =   x*x/0.65-x

                         1.38*10^-4*(0.65-x) = x^2

                                    x   = 0.0094

                         [H^+]   =   x    = 0.0094M

                     PH = -log[H^=]

                            = -log0.0094   = 2.0268

A solution containing a mixture of lactic acid and lactate was found to have a pH of 3.56. Calculate the ratio of the lactate concentration to the lactic acid concentration in this solution.
During exercise when the body lacks an adequate supply of oxygen to support energy production, the pyruvate that is produced from the breakdown of glucose is converted into lactate. High lactate levels can lead to acidity in the muscle cells as some of the lactate hydrolyzes to lactic acid. The dissociation of lactic acid to lactate is shown in the reaction below. Lactic acid has a pKa of 3.86. A solution containing a mixture of lactic acid and lactate was found to...
