Post a 225- to 300-word (3- to 4-paragraph) explanation of the impact of unethical behaviors and business practices on an organization. In your explanation, address the following:
Do you agree with the statement that ethics are more important than any legality in an organization?
In my opinion, ethics and legality go hand in hand in an organization. Ethics are like the morality by which a person behaves ultimately by which a person lives. Legality in an organization is based on actual written laws. In order for an organization to maintain success the written laws have to be followed but also perform and maintain positive ethical behavior.
How might unethical – but legal – business behaviors or practices affect an organization? What about behaviors or business practices that are both unethical and illegal?
Employee relations can be affected. At an organization, when the management exhibits a less than stellar character, it could cause employees to show resentment towards management.
A company’s credibility can be called into question if they are not practicing ethical business behaviors.
Unethical yet legal practices within an organization could have some very adverse effects on the organization as a whole. This type of behavior could cost an organization its sponsors, hence making the organization no longer a reliable credible business. Being unethical, but also following the laws, could also bring down the morale of the organization as a whole. Business practices that are both unethical and illegal, will completely destroy an organization’s reputation along with how they are perceived.
Provide two examples of unethical business behavior or business practices – one legal, one illegal. These examples should be from the news, from social media, or from personal experiences. For each example, include the potential impact of the behavior/business practice on an organization. Consider the impact on individual employees, on relationships within teams and with leaders, as well as on the success of the business.
One legal example of unethical business behavior is paying a full-time employee minimum wage. Though this may be a legal tactic, it still poses an unethical issue. This is a common way that some companies are exploiting their workers.
A very popular illegal unethical business practice when someone, even times small time dealerships will put a car for sale on the lot knowing that they shouldn’t. The business may falsify documents by rolling the odometer back on the vehicle to help ensure it gets sold.
