1) Over a typical year, when is the ozone concentration normal and when is it at its lowest? Explain why.

2) Over many years going back as far as you can, describe any trends observed for the lowest annual concentrations observed. ( including support for answer).

3) Do you think the ozone layer is being replenished and the "hole" is filling in yet? ( including support for your answer)

Solutions

Expert Solution

The concentration of ozone decreases as flows in stratosphere of earth

O3 -----→ O2 + O

and it increases as O2+ O -----→ O3

The ozone depleting gases will reduce the amount of ozone or form holes in ozone umbrella. The temperature or the ultra violet radiation are responsible for this production and destruction. So the concentration of ozone will be lower at cold conditions and normal at other months.

The amount of ozone reduced means the ozone depletion starts or holes make start form in ozone layer. This caused by the production of ozone depleting gases like methane, sulfur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen and methane. As the industrial revolution progress through the years, the production of these gases also starts to increase, so the concentration of ozone is always decrease.

The holes of the ozone can be refilled by stopping the production of ozone depleting gases and reduce the pollution rate, use more efficient fuels and engine, always support sustainable development by promoting the use of renewable energy and the aspects of green chemistry. But things are not happening as we are expecting, still technology, inventions, industrial growth etc are happening, but nobody take care about its environmental aspects or how to produce and use these things without negatively affecting the nature and without giving any chance to prevent the escape these ozone depleting gases to the atmospheric layers.

A method used by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for determining the concentration of ozone in air is to pass the air sample through a "bubbler" containing sodium iodide, which removes the ozone according to the following equation: O3(g)+2NaI(aq)+H2O(l)→O2(g)+I2(s)+2NaOH(aq) Part A) How many moles of sodium iodide are needed to remove 5.95×10−6 mol O3? Part B) How many grams of sodium iodide are needed to remove 2.1 mg of O3?

(Redox) Titration Problem Testing for the concentration of ozone dissolved in water can be accomplished by titrating a known volume of the solution to be tested a with standardized potassium bromide solution. The reaction that takes place forms oxygen gas and the bromate ion which can be detected spectroscopically. In a particular experiment, a 25.00 mL ozone containing solution was titrated with 37.41 mL of 0.3290 M potassium bromide.
